Placement of Students

Wells Elementary School staff uses a comprehensive process to plan for balanced learning communities each year. The following information is considered during the process:

· Teacher knowledge of each child’s social, academic, and behavioral strengths and needs

· Literacy Support, Special Education, or STRETCH services needed

· Parental preferences and teacher recommendations for multi-age, or graded options

Since this process thoroughly examines students’ needs and creates well balanced classes, we do not accept parental requests for specific teachers and placement changes will not be made once determinations have been finalized.

Promotion and Retention of Students

The School Committee is dedicated to the appropriate and continuous development of each student enrolled. The professional staff is expected to place students at the level best suited to them academically, socially and emotionally.

Students will normally progress annually from grade to grade. Exceptions may be made when, in the judgment of the professional staff, such exceptions are in the best educational interest of the students involved. Exceptions will always be made after prior notification and explanation to each student’s parents, but the final decision will rest with the Superintendent of Schools.
